If you have searched Google lately, you will have noticed something different at the top of the page: a written answer, generated on the spot, before you reach a single blue link. That is an AI Overview, and it has left a lot of business owners asking a fair question. If Google just answers people directly, is there any point in SEO anymore?
The short answer is yes, and arguably more than before. Here is why.
AI Overviews are built on search, not instead of it
It is easy to assume AI has replaced the old ranking system with something entirely new. It hasn't. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode run on the same ranking and quality signals as ordinary search. They use a technique called Retrieval-Augmented Generation, which is a long way of saying they pull real, indexed web pages and summarise them, with citations.
In other words, the AI is not inventing answers from thin air. It is reading pages that already rank well and stitching them together. If your page is one of those, you get quoted, linked, and seen. If it isn't, you are invisible in the answer regardless of how good your product is.
That is the part worth sitting with: appearing in an AI Overview is downstream of ranking well. The businesses being cited are almost always the ones with strong, traditional SEO foundations.
What has actually changed
The mechanics are familiar. The bar is higher.
AI systems are noticeably better at spotting content that says nothing. Generic, written-for-Google filler that could have come from anyone gets passed over. What gets pulled into answers is content with genuine expertise, a clear point of view, and specific, useful detail.
So the shift is less about new tricks and more about quality. The pages that win are the ones that answer a real question properly, from real experience.
Three things that put you in the frame
If you want to show up in AI-generated answers, the work is not exotic:
- Be crawlable. If Google cannot reach and understand a page, no AI feature can cite it. Clean structure, fast loading, and sensible internal links still come first.
- Answer clearly. Pages that state a question and answer it directly, in plain language, are far easier for an AI to lift and attribute than a wall of marketing copy.
- Show real expertise. First-hand knowledge, specific numbers, and an honest point of view are exactly what generic content lacks, and exactly what gets quoted.
None of that is new advice. It is just SEO done properly, which is what has always worked.
The honest takeaway
AI has changed how answers are presented, not how Google decides what is worth surfacing. If anything, it has raised the reward for doing the fundamentals well and lowered the tolerance for cutting corners.
Businesses that invest in solid SEO now are building an asset that keeps working as search interfaces keep changing. That was true before AI Overviews arrived, and it is truer today.
